Magento 2 training for free has been announced by the Magento U team to help ease the transition from Magento 1 to the new Magento 2 platform for both merchants and developers Four courses have been made available on Magento U – Fundamentals of Magento 2, Core Principles of Magento 2, Managing your Magento Store and Responsive Web Design (RWD) in Magento 2. The courses are all based on Magento Community Edition v2.1.0, which as we discussed in our Magento 2 Reflections blog post, was not the most stable platform. Version updates since the launch of the training could mean some of the elements talked about in the courses may have changed slightly. Those interested in these courses best hurry though, as the courses are only available free of charge until the 31st March. This o...

Magento 2 development began in earnest back in the Spring of 2016, as our first Magento 2 client was commissioned, ExpressCo Direct based here in Northampton – with 9 storefronts to build out on a single Magento 2 plarform. After monitoring the feedback from other developers and their early experiences of Magento 2 development, we were ready for a learning curve. And it proved to be a steep one! Magento 2 - Plagued by initial bug ridden release We got to work using version 2.0.3 on the first install. Coupled with our lack of experience, which was the case for every developer at the time, it was an experience to say the least! This version was heavily bug laden and not production ready. The Magento development team had clearly released it too early and were hoping that the Magento...

Roadchef, the well-known motorway service station brand, approached Star Digital to pitch for their digital marketing towards the end of 2013. The Star Digital team won and were appointed to work on a smartphone deals app, and also to redesign and build a new website for the brand. In April 2014 Star Digital launched the app on both Apple and Android, and an all-new responsive website. Roadchef needed a smartphone app that would drive footfall into their service stations by promoting daily deals and offering easy-to-access brand and location information. The website needed to be easy for travellers to use, as well as it using consistent branding to that used in the app. Knowing Roadchef’s potential customers were likely to be on the move we recommended a responsive website. A...

[caption id="attachment_802" align="aligncenter" width="240"] The suspect after apprehension[/caption] On Wednesday 5th March 2014 at around 11am, multiple reports of a Border Collie acting suspiciously in the Star Digital studio were made. The suspect was then caught red pawed stealing sandwiches from a fellow employee. The suspect was then apprehended on the spot and taken straight to his bed, where he carried out his sentence of 10 minutes without time off for good behaviour... Banjo Martin is well known to the authorities, he has also had previous convictions for “Rummaging through bins” and “Breaking and Entering into Kitchens”, as well as "Rounding up local sheep with out permission". “Devastated” said John Little, sandwich theft victim. “I was working away...

This week Google awarded us Google Partner status. The Partner badge below is only given to agencies, or online marketers, who meet certain criteria such as following Google best practice when creating and managing AdWords accounts, providing high customer service levels and passing a minimum of two Google AdWords exams. At STAR we really value the relationships we have with our clients, and we follow Google best practice when it comes to managing PPC accounts, and receiving Partner status is confirmation that Google thinks we’re getting it right. It was in the autumn of 2013 when Google launched its new certification programme for agencies and online marketers: Google Partners. Google Partners replaces the old AdWords certification programme. This change means agencies now not ...

Recently we have welcomed three new team members into the Star family. Mina Masih joined us in November as part of our account management team. Yomi joined us in January; he is working as part of the programming and development team, which is getting increasingly busy! Yomi has come from an agency background and has over six years’ experience in backend development covering Magento and PHP. We are very proud to be associated with the Charitarian, a Chinese based CSR magazine and organisation that is helping companies looking to trade ethcially in China. One of the guys that runs this operation is Rob Pearson, who is incidentally the managing director of CIC in Burslem, the packaging and 3D modelling specialists, and a huge fan of digital publishing. It was while we were chatting before his recent trip to China, he has 3 offices over there, that he asked me what we could do to improve the accessiblity/availablity and awareness of the Charitarian magazine. Star Digital currently provide the Charitarian with a customised Wordpress Blog and a Page Flip 3D emagazine format, both of which have proved successful, but we hit on the idea of an iPhone and iPad app version ...

Star Digital were proud to achieve the rank of Silver Partner with Rackspace, the world's no1 dedicated server hosting company, famous for their 'fanatical support'. Roger Martin, Star Digital MD said "We signed up as a partner with Rackspace after performing due diligence for Fellows & Sons Auctioneers as part of their recent website upgrade. It was a major project and we knew we needed excellent support, a fast server infrastructure with separate servers for the web application and the database. From day one when we approached Rob Dobing, we were guided through the process with the technical team to ensure we scoped the right solution to ensure that the Fellows website ran quickly with total uptime, and had scalability for future phases. We've been delighted with the result as...

We recently teamed up with the creative team at Quest Construction Marketing to develop a Joomla web site for our client Fire Design Solutions. The goal was to create an eye catching web site aimed at the architectural market promoting the Fire Design Solutions sister company FDS Consult, a specialist fire safety consultancy. To create the required look we had to base each page in the site on a different background image and float the content above it. The result is a very different look and feel, but with full CMS control from the Joomla back end making editing truly WYSIWYG. Other nifty tools employed in the build included Yoo Tools accordions to present more complex data in a user friendly way, and some cool AJAX controls on the meet the team page. Take a look for yourself, ...

We've just finished a project with our friends from CIC for the well known Caterham company, manufacturers of quality fireplaces normally, but in this case for their very high quality granite kitchen worktops business. Basically they needed a nice website to showcase the different types of granite available to their customers, so we provided a CMS solution in Joomla that uses the Yoo Tools plugin with some mods to make for a fluid user experience. But it didn't stop there. The client wanted a nifty estimating system for reps on the road and third party distributors to use. For the front end we created a login area where they can go and create full blown estimates. The layout again controlled by a modified Yoo Tools set up, this time with a neat javascript accordian so that each st...

Well we said we would get into app development. it's a natural progression for us as digital marketers and web developers. James Bache, who looks after the Page Flip brand over here at STAR Digital hooked up with Xerox, one of his clients to produce an app for MK Electric, part of the Honeywell group of companies. The goal, to produce an app that allowed Distributors to search and view tech spec for their quite frankly enormous product range using an iPhone or iPad. James got under the bonnet of Xcode with the developers and they produced a great looking, smooth functioning app and got it listed on the app store. Whole process start to finish, 3 months. Done. Since then we've started work on quite a few more, and the next one to launch is actually part of a Chinese initi...

You may or may not know Mike Nash, author of the Health & Wellness book Aggressive Health, but this guy is a bit of a personality in the wellness world, and walks the talk. We've been working with Mike for a few years now helping him with his digital strategy, and his ecommerce. Until recently he was using ePages, which in fairness was a great estore package for its day (3 yrs ago) but since we've started working with Magento, we've been transferring clients across at the earliest opportunity. Well anyway, I had a chat with mike and mentioned this Magento thing, and he said 'OK, sounds interesting' can you do me a demo? Knowing that Mike likes to 'get under the bonnet' I said 'I'll go one better, I'll put you a complete install on one our servers for you to play with'. Well Mi...
